The Australian life insurance industry is actively supporting the evolution of the Life Insurance Code of Practice to align with regulatory changes and evolving consumer expectations.
This initiative underscores the industry's dedication to maintaining trust and delivering value to policyholders.

The Council of Australian Life Insurers (CALI) has emphasized the importance of the code in fostering trust between insurers and the public. CEO Christine Cupitt stated that for the code to remain effective, it must adapt to regulatory developments and reflect community expectations.

CALI's submission advocates for the code to provide clear protections for customers, particularly those experiencing vulnerability, financial hardship, or mental health challenges. The submission also suggests that clearer language and a more straightforward structure could enhance customer understanding and confidence.

Former regulator Peter Kell is leading the review of the voluntary code, with an interim report expected early next year. The review focuses on areas such as mental health protections, claims handling, medical definitions, and complaints management. Enforceability of the code is also a key consideration.

Consumer feedback is integral to this process, ensuring that the code effectively addresses the needs and concerns of policyholders. The industry's proactive approach to refining the code demonstrates a commitment to upholding high standards and fostering a transparent and trustworthy relationship with consumers.

For policyholders, these developments signal a positive shift towards more robust consumer protections and a more responsive life insurance industry. Staying informed about these changes can help individuals make more informed decisions about their life insurance coverage.
